Activity 2. Investigation of bacteria in food samples
- Examine the food samples prepared by the teacher using Worksheet 2. Instructions for conducting a food product study. Work in small groups.
- Compare the results of the different food products.
- Draw or take pictures of the bacteria observed.
- Share the results of the group’s research with the class.
Follow these steps:
- Take a small amount of the product that contains bacteria or fungi (yoghurt, cheese, bread) and dilute it with water in a small cup (plastic or glass).
- Apply a drop of the solution to a slide and cover it with a cover glass.
- Place the slide under a microscope and adjust the eyepiece and objective for best viewing.
- Observe the different shapes and sizes of the microscopic organisms and try to identify them by their characteristics.
- Make drawings or photographs of what you see.
- Repeat the procedure with other food items and compare the results.
