Activity 1. Simulating the pollination process

 

You will learn how bees pollinate plants and why this process is vital for the environment and humanity. To do this, you will carry out an experiment to simulate the pollination process. Use Worksheet 1. Pollination of plants.

 

  1. Work in small groups of 2-3. You will need the following materials:
  • cotton balls (representing the bees)
  • pollen (you can use yellow powder or cooking powder)
  • artificial or paper flowers
  • small cups or bowls
  1. Place pollen (yellow powder) in the center of each flower.
  2. Use the cotton balls to simulate bees collecting pollen from one flower and transferring it to another.
  3. Conclude by answering the following questions:
  • How does pollination lead to fruit and vegetable growth? Explain.
  • Why is pollination vital to the food chain?
