Bees – the Rescuers of the World

Activity 2. Development of the honey bee population in Europe

You will work independently. You have 20 minutes.

1. Analyse the data shown in the graphs on honey bee colony losses in recent years in Europe. Identify the main causes and discuss what are the factors that affect bee populations.
This graph is from the official EPILOBEE report of the European Honey Bee Health Reference Laboratory. It shows honey bee losses in European countries in the years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014.

2. Based on the data shown in the graphs, determine which countries have increased honey bee mortality and which have decreased honey bee mortality.

3. Answer the questions in Worksheet 2. Evolution of honey bee populations in Europe:

  • What do you think are the reasons for the decline in honey bee populations?
  • How does this affect global food production and ecosystems?
  • What are the bee population trends?
  • What factors are most influencing the decline of bees?
  • What are the consequences of bee population decline?
