Do Mushrooms Bite?

Do Mushrooms Bite?

What I learned

❖ Mushrooms belong to a separate kingdom called Mushroom Kingdom. They are neither plants nor animals. Some fungi are single-celled microorganisms – like yeast, which are not visible to the naked eye. Others are multicellular – made up of many cells called hyphae, which play an important role in the structure, function and reproduction of fungi.

❖ Some types of mushrooms are edible and very tasty, often used in cooking. Others, however, are poisonous and dangerous to our health.

❖ Mushrooms can be both harmful and very beneficial to humans and the environment. Some fungi can cause infections or eczema on the skin and others can be used in medicines as they produce antibiotic substances.

❖ Fungi are necessary for life processes in many biomes. They decompose organic materials, such as dead leaves and trees, and return nutrients to the soil. Some species form bonds with plant roots and help them absorb water and nutrients.

❖ They are also used in industry – to produce enzymes for the food, textile and paper industries; to produce biomaterials such as packaging and building materials.

❖ Research into the study of fungi and their properties is ongoing and we can look forward to new innovative uses for these interesting organisms.

❖ Google Inc’s Teachable Machine platform allows us to work with a virtual machine to recognize a particular sponge according to given criteria.
