Atmospheric Pressure

Atmospheric Pressure

Activity 2. Determination of pressure versus altitude

Recall the units used to measure atmospheric pressure:

1 Pa (pascal) = N/m²

1 hPa (hectopascal) = 100 Pa

1 kPa (kilopascal) = 1 000 Pa

Instructions for students:

  1. Read the information below:

In the literature, the average atmospheric pressure for Slovakia is 1 013,25 hPa. At this pressure, water boils at a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius. The following extreme values of atmospheric pressure have been measured on the territory of the former Czechoslovakia:

  • absolute maximum of 1 055,4 hPa in Khurbanovo
  • an absolute minimum of 970,1 hPa in Hradec Kralove
  1. Determine the boiling point of water at the given extreme pressures.
  2. Help with the graph of the dependence of the boiling point of water on pressure.
