Dangerous Attraction

Activity 2. Attraction of nails by electromagnet

  1. Familiarse yourself with the information in the text and table.

Katherine tested the properties of an electromagnet created from a coil with 60 turns and a magnetically soft steel core. She calculated the number of nails the electromagnet could hold depending on the magnitude of the current flowing through it. The results are given in the table.

I (A) 0 0,5 1,0 1,5 2,0 2,5 3,0 3,5 4,0
number of nails 0 1 4 9 15 21 27 33 38

  1. Draw a graph of the dependence of the number of nails attached on the magnitude of the current flowing.

  1. Using the data from the graph, answer the following questions:
    • What is the effect of the magnitude of the current on the strength of the electromagnet’s magnetic field?
    • Will the electromagnet catch more nails if the current is increased?
    • How will increasing the number of coils affect the number of nails fastened? Explain.
    • How will removing the core from the coil affect the number of nails attached? Explain.
