Activity 1. Halley’s Comet

- Look carefully at the images showing Halley’s Comet and its orbit.
- Using the data from the graph, answer the following questions:
-
- How long does it take a comet to orbit the Sun?
- When was the last time the comet was closest to the Sun, i.e., at its perihelion? Have your parents, or grandparents seen this comet?
- When will the comet be closest to the Sun again? How old will you be then?
- When was the comet the same distance as the planet Uranus?
- How long did the comet fly around the Sun at a distance less than the distance to Uranus?
- How long did the comet fly around the Sun at a distance greater than the distance to Uranus?
- Judge whether the comet’s speed is uniform or varies throughout its orbit.
