Activity 3. Comparison of sunrises and sunsets in different European cities

  1. Locate on the map of Europe the cities listed in Tables 1 and 2 (London, Rome, Košice, Stockholm). Mark their location.
  2. Open and observe the spreadsheets – Table 1. Latitude and longitude of four cities in Europe and Table 2. Sunrises and sunsets in Central European Summer Time and UTC World Time

3. Complete Table 3. Determine the duration of sunshine (in hours and minutes), i.e. the time when the Sun is above the horizon – at solstice and equinox.

4. Based on the data from the four European cities listed in Tables 1-3, decide whether the statement is true:

    • In the northernmost city, the Sun is the longest above the horizon at the summer solstice.
    • In the southernmost city, the Sun is 3 hours longer above the horizon during the winter solstice than in the northernmost city.
    • In Rome, the night is shortest during the summer solstice (of the four cities listed)
    • During the equinoxes, the duration of sunshine is about the same in all four cities.
    • The sun rises about 85 minutes earlier in Košice than in London.
    • During the summer solstice, the sun rises earlier in Stockholm than in Košice, even though Košice is further east.
    • During the equinox, the Sun rises later in the city, which has a longer east longitude.

Solve the problem by completing the interactive exercise given in the lesson:

5. Calculate the difference between the longest and shortest days in each of the given cities. How many hours and minutes is the day longer at the summer solstice compared to the winter solstice?

6. Calculate by how many seconds (or minutes) on average the sunshine time changes in 1 day in each city.
