The iron in man
Iron is one of the most important minerals in the human body. It plays an indispensable role in vital processes, forming haemoglobin, which carries oxygen from the lungs to all cells in the body. It helps the body’s muscles stay in good condition, controls body temperature, helps the immune system work and get stronger, helps cells produce energy, and guards against anaemia. It is crucial for DNA synthesis as well.
The health of the body depends largely on maintaining a constant amount of iron in it. For the adult body, it is about 4 g for men and about 2.5 g for women. A daily dietary intake of 8 to 18 mg is necessary because the body excretes/loses about 1-2 g of iron daily.
