Chemistry Inside of Us

Chemistry Inside of Us

Activity 1. Beverages and Chemistry

The task is to investigate the chemical elements in the drinks you consume in your daily life. You will work in teams and record the data in a spreadsheet.

1. Research various statistics about the most popular drinks you consume in your daily life, focusing on the following:

How popular is it in your country, among which age groups?
Is it also popular in the rest of the world?
How good/harmful is it for our health?
How does it affect our insides? Does it affect our digestion?
What is the chemistry behind it?

2. Record the results of your research in the table provided. Work as a team, dividing up your tasks.

3. Create a bar graph that reflects the data in the table.

4. Present the results of your group work to the class.

5. Engage in a class discussion about what general patterns you found and which 5 of all the beverage data presented should be reflected in the class’s overall bar graph. Select one representative from each group to participate in creating the overall bar graph.

Instructions for creating a bar chart in Excel:

  • Highlight the data you want to include in the chart.
  • Open the Insert tab.
  • Select the Column Chart option and select the desired chart type (e.g., grouped bar chart).

6. What conclusions can be drawn based on the comparisons?

  • Which beverages contain the most sugar, sodium, etc.?
  • How do these chemicals affect our health?
