Plant a Tree – Make Yourself Air

Activity 3. Photosynthesis and respiration

In this activity you will learn about the process of respiration in humans, and recall what photosynthesis is. You will compare the two processes.

1. Complete the tasks on Worksheet 2. Photosynthesis and respiration.

After studying the graphical representation of the process of photosynthesis, underline the correct answer in each statement:

  • Photosynthesis takes place in plant/animal organisms.
  • Photosynthesis occurs only in the presence of wind/exposure to sunlight.
  • During photosynthesis, the plant takes up oxygen/carbon dioxide.
  • During photosynthesis,s the plant produces oxygen/carbon dioxide.
  • During respiration, the human body converts oxygen to carbon dioxide/carbon dioxide to oxygen.

2. Read the text carefully:

Breathing is a physiological process vital to all living things. Through it, the organism takes in oxygen from the environment and releases carbon dioxide, an exchange of gases takes place between the atmosphere and our body through inhalation and exhalation of air. The cells need oxygen for their vital activities and get it through the bloodstream to every part of the body. Oxygen produced during respiration is processed in the respiratory chain where it is converted into water. Carbon dioxide is the end product of various processes in the body.

The respiratory system is responsible for the transport of these substances and the exchange of gases. The exchange takes place on the principle of diffusion. After the absorption of these gases by the lungs, they pass into the blood by which they are carried to the various tissues. The two gases, oxygen and carbon dioxide are carried into the blood by haemoglobin. Through the respiratory system, the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the environment is realized.

3. Compare the processes of photosynthesis in plants and respiration in humans.
