Be Happy, Be Healthy

Be Happy, Be Healthy

Main topic information 1

Vocabulary/new concepts:

Endorphin – it is called the hormone of happiness; through the synthesis of this hormone in the human body, the feeling of happiness and calmness increases, the mood improves, and anxiety and depression decrease.

Serotonin is another hormone called the happiness hormone. A significant portion of this hormone is made in the gut, but it serves as a “carrier” of nerve impulses in the brain. This hormone makes people feel good, and regulates mood, sleep and appetite; it can prolong life.

Cortisol – this hormone is referred to as the stress hormone because its levels increase significantly after physical and emotional stress. It helps regulate carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism and plays a role in cognitive function, including memory and attention.

Before we begin… We will do a home study on our own and record the data in a table.
Do you know what a human pulse is? Do you know how it is measured?

Pulse is the beating in the arteries (blood vessels) that is caused by the contractions (rhythmic contraction and expansion) of the heart.

How is pulse measured?

  • Place your index and middle fingers at the base of your wrist under the thumb of your other hand until you feel the artery that is pulsing;
  • Count how many pulses you feel in a time of 10 seconds, then multiply this number by 6. This will tell you how many beats per minute your heart is beating.

Over a week, you will take your pulse and record it on the chart provided. It is available at

You can also fill in the data in an Excel spreadsheet Worksheet 0. Pre-measurement of heart rate. You will also record your mood data in the same table.
