Let’s Save the Ocean

Let’s Save the Ocean

Activity 1. How much plastic gets into the ocean?

Plastic is cheap and efficient, which is why it has become an integral part of our everyday lives. However, the widespread use of plastics leads to pollution, which harms our seas and all the marine animals that live in them.

  1. Make a research of the pollution of the waters of the World Ocean using the data from the diagram. Answer the questions:
  • What are the sources of plastic pollution in ocean waters?
  • From which source of pollution are 270 million tonnes of plastic entering ocean waters?
  • From which source does most of the ocean pollution come?
  • How much plastic is ending up in the ocean from unsecured landfills?

  1. The following chart shows the time it takes to degrade different types of plastic in years. Explore the data in the chart and answer the questions:

  • How long does it take to break down a carton of milk?
  • Compare the time it takes to break down disposable nappies and plastic bags. Which takes longer to degrade?
  • Which plastics take the longest to degrade?
  • Compare the time it takes to break down a fishing line and a plastic bottle.

  1. Draw conclusions about the effects of ocean pollutants, particularly plastics, on the environment and human health. Should we give up using plastic?
